Colorful, Healthy Grilled Salmon Skewers

This is a very simple recipe that I love to make on a summer evening over the BBQ. The color contrast of the peppers and red onion with the pink salmon is just as appetizing to the eye as the flavor is to the palette. Alternatively, this recipe can also easily be done with chicken, beef or lamb.

Salmon Skewers

I usually serve this with a quinoa salad or fresh kale salad for a complete meal! Add a fresh squeeze of lemon right before serving and you will be delighted at the results. These kebabs came about over the long May weekend when my 5 year old niece and I were cooking together. I typically find salmon too strong a taste, however by adding the onions and the peppers the flavour of the salmon is mellowed, appeasing even the most critical taste buds. Simple enough for even a 5 year old to make and very pretty to look at!

Calories per serving: 88 per skewer


  • 6 ounces of wild salmon fillets (fresh or frozen), cut into bite size pieces
  • 1/2 green pepper, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1/2 yellow pepper, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1/2 red pepper, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1 medium red onion, cut into bite size pieces
  • cracked black pepper to taste
  • 4 large or 6 small wooden skewers


  • Soak the wooden skewers in water for at least 20 minutes before barbequing to prevent the wooden skewers from burning.
  • Take the wooden skewers and spear on a piece of red onion pushing it to the bottom of the skewer. Add a piece of salmon and push it down to meet the onion, then add a piece of pepper and keep layering vegetables and fish until the skewers are full.
  • Sprinkle each skewer with cracked black pepper.
  • Grill or BBQ skewers until the salmon is cooked and the vegetables are crisp-tender, (about 6-10 minutes).
