How to Make Shamrock Shakes

Shamrock shakes are a March favorite for lots of folks, small or tall, young or… not as young! If you’re interested in making your own kid-friendly variations at home, this awesome recipe is just what you need. Of course, if you’re celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in a more grown-up fashion, we’ve also got an excellent version that should put you in extra good spirits for the holiday. Both are delicious, but only one of them is okay to drink before driving! Try ’em out this weekend.

Shamrock Shakes

Yield: 2 shakes


  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 1/4 cups milk
  • 1/4 tsp mint extract
  • green food coloring, to desired amount
  • whipped cream, for topping


  • Pour all your ingredients into a blender and blend! You may need to scoop down the sides of the blender occasionally to insure an even mix. Once it's smooth, pour it into a tall glass, top with whipped cream (if desired), and enjoy!

For those over 21, here’s an excellent version with vodka and creme de menthe! This recipe makes 1 shake that you can share if you like, or double the recipe for a friend.

Grown-Up Shamrock Shakes


  • 1/2 fluid ounce vodka
  • 1 fluid ounce green creme de menthe
  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
  • 1 mint sprig, for garnish


  • Pour vodka, creme de menthe, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a blender and blend on high. Once it's smooth, pour the drink into a tall, chilled glass. Garnish with mint and enjoy!
