Sure, you might not eat it enough to make great use from a rice cooker, but making your own rice on the stove-top is easy and economical. Just follow these step-by-step tips and guidelines, and you can make your own fluffy pot of steamed rice at home that will go well with any kind of meal!
Basic Materials Needed: a lidded cooking pot, rice, water
- Measure out the rice and pour it into the pot. Add water.
The amount of liquid and rice will change depending on the kind used, but generally for every cup of long grain white rice, you should add 1 1/2 cups of water. Short grains usually require slightly less water, and brown rice typically gets a little more.
- Bring the water to a boil. Cover the pot immediately, and turn the heat down to a very low simmer.
- Cook for 10-12 minutes, until the rice is soft and the water has been absorbed. You can check the rice periodically as it’s cooking to ensure it’s reached the optimal tenderness.
- Take the pot away from the heat keeping the lid on and let sit for 5 minutes. This allows the moisture to distribute more evenly throughout the rice.
If you use too much water, drain the rice by pouring it into a colander over the sink, shaking it to dislodge the remaining water.
- Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork!
